On July 12th, hockey legend Dale Hawerchuk hosted his second Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic of the summer, with this one being in Winnipeg. Dale Hawerchuk takes great pride in being able to host an event of this magnitude in Winnipeg, as it brings Dale Hawerchuk back to the city where he spent the first 9 seasons of his NHL career playing for the Jets. During his time with the Jets, Dale Hawerchuk became one of the most popular athletes Winnipeg has ever seen.
In addition to Dale Hawerchuk, there were several other distinguished NHL alumni on hand for the Winnipeg version of the Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic. These include other former Winnipeg Jets stars Dave Ellett, Kris King, Scott Arniel and Jordy Douglas, as well as current Winnipeg Jets assistant coach and a member of the Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 1980s, Charlie Huddy. The New York Islanders championship teams were well represented with Billy Smith and Manitoba native Butch Goring in attendance. Former Toronto Maple Leafs defensemen Al Iafrate, Ric Nattress and Brad May took part in the festivities, with Nattress acting as emcee for the event. The celebrity guest list for this year’s Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic would be rounded out by former Montreal Canadiens centre Brian Skrudland, former New York Rangers teammates Larry Melnyk and Ron Duguay and former Buffalo Sabre Doug Bodger.
The three-day event commenced with a VIP dinner for the celebrities and guests and employees of the Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic’s main partner, Scotia Mortgage Authority. The VIP dinner took place at the luxurious 529 Wellington Steakhouse in Winnipeg. Following a great meal and hospitality provided by staff at the 529 Wellington Steakhouse, the festivities concluded for the night with most of the guests returning to the Fairmont Hotel.
The next day was the Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic’s VIP golf day. Similar to the previous night, the VIP day is a smaller golf tournament catered to the celebrities and Scotia Mortgage Authority’s guests and employees. This round occurred at Winnipeg’s beautiful Southwood Golf Course. The event began with an 11:00 am shotgun start and featured 11 foursomes, with 12 celebrities taking part in the fun. A delicious on course lunch was prepared and provided by the Southwood Golf Course staff to all the participants throughout the golf day. After golf, everyone partaking in the VIP tournament had the option to attend a reception in the Southwood Club House that lasted until shuttles transported everyone back to the Fairmont Hotel at 6:00pm. After a brief downtime, all the VIPs were due at a reception at The Pint in downtown Winnipeg for a reception similar to the one held the previous night at The 529 Wellington. The reception consisted of several prizes, including 50/50 tickets, raffles, a card draw and a celebrity shootout.
The third and final day of the Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic featured the main golf tournament at the Elmhurst Golf Course. Registration and the sale of raffle, 50/50 and card draw tickets began at 9:30 am. Upon registration, those partaking in the Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic received a wide variety of gifting items. These included a Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic t-shirt, Adidas sandals, hoodie, and a leather bag. The tournament featured several attractions located on various holes. These included the option to purchase celebrity shootout, 50/50 and raffle tickets. The celebrity shootout occurs at the end of the day when all the celebrities shoot at the green from the same spot in the fairway. People can wager on which celebrity they think will get closest to the pin. If they are correct, their prize money will be determined based upon how much money they wagered. There was also a Caesar hole, an ice cream hole and a cigar hole. The Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic participants also had the opportunity to receive a quick massage as well as try some great pulled pork sliders being handed out by Danny’s BBQ. Everyone finished golf at around 4:30pm, after which they retreated to an after golf reception at the Elmhurst Golf Course Club House. After the reception everyone was shuttled back to the Fairmont Hotel for 1 last evening of fun.
Upon arriving for cocktails at 7:00 PM, all the participants found 1 last special gift waiting at their chairs, a Mark Scheifele #55 Winnipeg Jets jersey. In addition to a fantastic dinner provided by the Fairmont staff, the event also featured the 50/50, raffle tickets and card draws, as well as a silent auction and live auction. The evening festivities concluded at approximately 10:00 PM. On behalf of Dale Hawerchuk and the staff at Jackson Events, thank you to all the participants, sponsors and celebrities for coming out, sharing laughs and supporting several great causes.
