Scotty Bowman (HHOF ’91)
If hockey is war, then Scotty Bowman is General George Patton. A master of motivation and of mind games, Bowman was a NHL head coach for 27 seasons, never experiencing a losing season. Starting with the expansion St. Louis Blues, he then spent eight seasons in Montreal.
Mr. Bowman’s Canadiens won the Cup five times (1973, 1976-1979), with at least 45 wins per season. Coaching in Buffalo from 1979-1987, he then became an analyst on Hockey Night in Canada. Bowman returned to coaching and won a Cup in Pittsburgh (1992) and three more in Detroit (1997, 1998, 2002). A two-time winner of the Jack Adams trophy, his 1,244 wins (.654 winning percentage) make him the most successful coach in NHL history and his eight Stanley Cups tie him with Toe Blake for the most all-time. A television analyst once more, Bowman is an excellent highlight for any event.
