Pat Burns
Originally a Montreal police constable, Pat Burns eventually made his way into the Canadiens organization as the coach of the AHL’s Sherbrooke Canadiens in 1987-1988. The next year, he became the coach of the NHL team and led them to the Stanley Cup finals, only to lose to Calgary. He remained as the Montreal bench boss for three more years, and then coached for four years in Toronto, followed by three years in Boston.
Winning the Jack Adams trophy a record three times (all coming in the first year with each new team!), Burns is known as strong disciplinarian who gets results. Burns moved to the New Jersey Devils in 2002 where he led the team to their third Stanley Cup.
