Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter

Rubin Carter’s story has been told in song and on film.  A former professional boxer, he was wrongly arrested and convicted for a triple-murder.  He received three life sentences and narrowly escaped the electric chair.  Maintaining his innocence all along, authorities finally dismissed his 22-year-old indictment in 1988 and he was released from prison.

The subject of a Bob Dylan song and portrayed by Denzel Washington in The Hurricane, Carter now lobbies to free wrongly convicted prisoners.  The author of The 16th Round: From Number 1 Contender to Number 45472, Carter is an accomplished speaker, focusing on topics such as ‘Going the Distance’, ‘The Story of the Hurricane’, ‘Education and Literacy’ and ‘Justice and the Legal System’.
