Gary Dornhoefer
Gritty, gritty, gritty…that’s how many people remember Gary Dornhoefer. A member of the Philadelphia Flyers’ ‘Broad Street Bullies’, Dornhoefer was originally selected by the Boston Bruins. However, after he was left unprotected, the Flyers picked him up in the 1967 expansion draft. Parking himself in front of the net, Dornhoefer discovered that a physical style of play often made opponents give him a wider berth. This resulted in more goals but also more penalty minutes. However, Dornhoefer won two Stanley Cups with Philadelphia; he would retire as a Flyer in 1978. A member of the Philadelphia Flyers Hall of Fame, he can be heard as a colour analyst for local Flyer television broadcasts.
