Eddie Giacomin (HHOF ’87)
‘Fast” Eddie Giacomin was one of the most popular New York Rangers ever. Playing 500 out of 610 regular season games with the Blueshirts, he joined the NHL after signing a minor league contract in 1958. After playing with the Providence Reds, he joined up with the Rangers in 1965 and became the starting goalie after Cesare Maniago fell into coach Emile Francis’ bad books. For nine seasons, Giacomin made the Rangers stronger, including a 109-point season in 1971. This was a club record and Giacomin won the Vezina trophy with teammate Gilles Villemure. After being put on waivers in 1975, Giacomin went to Detroit, where he retired. Finishing his career with over 300 wins and 54 shutouts, Fast Eddie worked as an assistant with the Islanders, Red Wings and finally, the New York Rangers.
