Gordie Howe (HHOF ’72)
Mr. Hockey. Every sports fan knows who he is. Gordie Howe’s 33 seasons spanned from the end of WWII to Wayne Gretzky’s first season. Incredibly strong, he was in the top five for scoring for 20 straight seasons. He was ambidextrous and often switch grips to throw off defenders. He was also incredibly tough. When Rocket Richard tried to make an example of the Red Wing rookie, Howe knocked out Richard cold with one punch. Playing on “The Production Line” (an homage to the Motor City industry) with Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay, he began to cool his temper and heat up the scoring. In all, Howe was selected to 21 NHL All-Star squads, 12 times to the First Team. Six times he led the NHL in scoring to capture the Art Ross Trophy and six times he won the Hart as the league's most valuable player. His Detroit teams won the Stanley Cup four times. In 1997, he played one game for the Detroit Vipers at almost 70 years of age.
