Harry Howell (HHOF ’79)
By the time he retired, Harry Howell had played more professional games than any other defenseman in history. His 1411 NHL games and 170 WHA games started in 1952, when he signed for the New York Rangers. In his first 16 seasons, he only missed 17 games! In 1967, he won the Norris Trophy for best defenseman. In 1969, he was traded to the Oakland Seals and then the Los Angeles Kings in 1971. In 1973, he moved to the WHA where he played for several teams before retiring in 1975. The next year, he moved to the Cleveland Barons’ front office and became their GM until they merged with the Minnesota North Stars; Howell became chief scout.
