Tom Johnson (HHOF ’90)
A great skater, puck handler and defenseman, Tom Johnson was critical as a point man for the Montreal Canadiens. Traded by Toronto while still a junior, he spent five years in the minors before securing a spot in 1950. He won his first Stanley Cup in 1953 and went on to win five more in the Habs’ consecutive wins from 1956 to 1960. In 1959, he was a First Team All-Star and Norris Trophy winner. A facial injury in 1962 almost ended his career as he suffered eye damage. Left unprotected in the Waiver Draft, Boston took a chance on him. He played 121 games for the Bruins before a skate severed some nerves in his leg, sidelining him permanently. He moved into the front office and helped Harry Sinden build a championship team. Johnson coached the Bruins to a Stanley Cup in 1970 and was assistant GM for their 1972 victory.
