Red Kelly (HHOF ’69)
Red Kelly was a boxer who won hockey’s Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship four times. He started with Detroit in 1947 and won the Stanley Cup with them in 1950; over the next five years, he won three more Cups with Detroit. In 1954, he was the first recipient of the Norris Trophy and became the Red Wings captain in 1956. Against his wishes, the Red Wings traded Kelly to the Rangers in 1960 – he refused to report and announced his retirement. Punch Imlach acquired his rights and convinced Kelly to come play for the Maple Leafs. In Toronto, Kelly played as a centre and won the Stanley Cup four more times. He became a Member of Parliament for three years upon his retirement. In 1965, Kelly returned to hockey and won the Stanley Cup again with the Leafs in 1967. He was traded to Los Angeles where he became head coach. He then went on to coach the Pittsburgh Penguins before returning to Toronto.
