Pat LaFontaine (HHOF ’03)
Drafted by the Islanders third overall in 1983, Pat LaFontaine played for the U.S. National team at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. Stepping onto a team filled with veterans, he struggled to find a solid place on an Islanders squad that had seen better days. When he was traded to Buffalo in 1991, he exploded for a team-record 148 points. His next few seasons were rife with injuries; however, LaFontaine continued to contribute. He had six seasons with at least 40 goals. Traded to the Rangers in 1996, he suffered two concussions over the next three seasons. After representing the U.S. at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, he finished his season and then retired with a career total of 468 goals and 1013 points.
