Rod Langway (HHOF ’02)

A tremendously gifted athlete, Rod Langway led the University of New Hampshire to a NCAA Championship tournament in both hockey and football.  Drafted by both the Montreal Canadians and the WHA’s Birmingham Bulls, Langway chose the WHA.  After the NHL and WHA merged, he became a Canadien and won the Cup with Montreal in 1979.  Because of a slumping Canadian dollar, Montreal was forced to trade Langway to Washington in 1982, where he helped turn the Capitals’ fortunes.  A pillar of strength on the Capitals’ blue line, Langway won back-to-back Norris Trophies.  A regular on the U.S. team in the 80’s, Langway retired in 1992.  The Capitals retired his number ‘5’ and he is an honoured member in the U.S., Massachusetts and official Hall of Fame.
