Howie Meeker (HHOF ’88)
A World War II veteran, Howie Meeker returned home to a free agent contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his rookie season of 1946-1947, he scored 45 points in 55 games and won the Calder Trophy. He also tied the record for most goals in one game by a rookie: five. That season, the Leafs won the first of three consecutive Stanley Cups. He would win a fourth in 1951. After leaving the NHL in 1959, he would play professional hockey for another 15 years. After that, he served in Parliament for four years before beginning a 30-year career as an announcer for Hockey Night in Canada and TSN.
