Marcel Pronovost (HHOF ’78)
One of a few Quebec players not signed by Montreal in the 40’s, Marcel Pronovost turned pro with the Detroit Red Wings in 1949, although he remained with the farm team. Thrust onto the team in 1950 after Gordie Howe was injured, Pronovost played in enough playoff games to get his name on the Stanley Cup. He would win three more Cups with the Wings as he eventually earned a place on the team. He wasn’t afraid to throw his body around and he experienced an astounding series of injuries, mostly to his face! In 1966, he was sent to Toronto where he was part of the “Over-The-Hill Gang” that won the Leafs’ last Cup in 1967. He retired in 1970 and started coaching, most notably in 1978 when he led the Sabres to a 105-point season. He was also a scout with the NHL Central Service and the New Jersey Devils.
