
Vladislav Tretiak (HHOF ’89)
Quite possibly the best goaltender to never play in the NHL, Vladislav Tretiak was a star from the 1972 Summit Series on. At 20 years of age, Canadian scouts wrote him off. However, with a lifetime 1.78 goals-against, a gold medal in three Olympics, 10 World Championships and nine European titles, Tretiak made the Soviet team almost unbeatable for the better part of two decades. The Central Red Army player was the MVP of the 1981 Canada Cup. He retired from international play in 1984; however, he has been the Chicago Blackhawks’ goaltender coach since 1990. His sharp intellect and love of the game make him an ideal teachers for generations of goalies to come.
