Norm Ullman (HHOF ’82)

Norm Ullman played the first of 13 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings in 1955-56.  He recorded 16 seasons with 20+ goals and only missed 21 games over a ten-game span.  In 1964-65, he led the league in scoring with 42 goals and consistently led the playoffs in scoring as well.  Because Red Wing management weren’t exactly happy that Ullman became president of the NHLPA, he was traded to the Maple Leafs in 1968 for Frank Mahovlich.  In 1970-1971, he registered a personal best of 85 points but that wasn’t good enough for Leafs management; he cleared waivers in 1975.  The WHA’s Edmonton Oilers picked him up and Ullman scored 130 points over two seasons.  He retired in 1977 and some say that he didn’t get the recognition that a 490-goal scorer should have received.  He is still active in the NHL Alumni hockey tour.
