Andy Van Hellemond (HHOF ’99)

Andy Van Hellemond refereed his first NHL game in 1972 at the age of 23.  That game was the first of many over a twenty-five year career.  He was ranked the league’s number one official 14 times and holds every major refereeing record, including most regular seasons games, playoff games and most appearances in the Stanley Cup finals.  He was also the first ref to wear a helmet in 1984.  He retired in 1996 and became senior vice-president of the East Coast Hockey League.  He is now the NHL’s Director of Officiating.
