As a family of 6 with one working parent we didnt have a lot of money, so in March 1996 when we scheduled a trip to Edmonton to watch the Leafs and Oilers it was a big deal. It was all of our first nhl games (i was 10 at the time), there was my family as well as some aunts uncles and cousins that went.
We were sitting 3 rows behind the net, right were the Leafs come out of the tunnel on to the ice. Myself, my two brothers and a couple uncles and cousins all had our shirts off with maple leafs painted on our stomachs.
Gilmour scored his 29th and 30th goals of the season that game and the Leafs went into the 3rd with a 4-3 lead. I remember sitting on pins and needles throughout the third just hoping Potvin could hold on to the lead and they did, making it probably the best day of my life up to that point.
Then after the game we lined up along the railing to see the Leafs players come off the ice. Gilmour was first star that game so they pulled him off to the side, and as they did he looked up in the stands and reached up and handed me his stick. (I dont remember this part, but my parents said another kid had reached out to grab the stick but Gilmour pulled it back and made sure I got it).
To this day, it is still one of the top 5 days of my life, so getting to meet him today was a great honor.
