Joe Nieuwendyk
Biography
A Two Time All American at Cornell University, Joe Nieuwendyk (HHOF ‘11) was better known in his home town of Whitby ON as a lacrosse MVP for the Minto Cup winning Warriors in 1984. Drafted by the Flames in 1985 in the 2nd round 27th overall he made an immediate impact winning theCalder Trophy as the rookie of the year in ‘87/’88. In Calgary he won the Stanley Cup in ’89 and was team captain from ’91 – ’95 and also won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for leadership. Joe was traded to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Jerome Iginla in ’95 and then movedt o New Jersey where he captured his second Stanley Cup and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in ’99. Another Stanley Cup withthe Devils in ’03 sandwiched between Team Canada Olympic appearances in’98 & ’02 winning Gold in Salt Lake City reuniting with Gary Roberts as members of the Toronto Maple Leafs and then finishing his playing career with the Florida Panthers retiring in 2006. A remarkable career was acknowledged with his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
