Nicklas Lidstrom
Biography
Widely regarded as 1 of the greatest defensemen of all time, Nicklas Lidstrom played 20 NHL seasons, all for the Detroit Red Wings. Lidstrom began his career spending 3 seasons with VIK Vasteras of the Swedish Elitserien League. Drafted 53rd overall by Detroit in 1989, Lidstrom would join the Red Wings for the 1991/92 season. Always dependable on both ends of the rink, Lidstrom would play a key role in Detroit’s 1997, 1998 and 2002 Stanley Cup victories. Lidstrom 16 points and +6 rating through 23 games in the 2002 playoffs earned him the Conn Smyth Trophy as playoff MVP. In 2006, Lidstrom was named the Red Wings captain after Steve Yzerman’s retirement. Lidstrom would guide the Red Wings to another Stanley Cup in 2008, and to an appearance in the finals again in 2009, this time losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Between 2001 and his last season of 2012, Lidstrom solidified himself as 1 of the best ever, winning 8 James Norris Trophies (between 2001-2011) as the NHL’s best defenseman. The only other players to win 8 Norris Trophies were Bobby Orr and Doug Harvey. In 2015, Lidstrom was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Lidstrom and his wife Annika have 3 sons, 2 of which play professional hockey in Sweden.
