Rich Gossage
Biography
A nine-time All-Star, Rich Gossage was one of baseball’s best-ever relievers. The prototype closer, his was an era when relief pitchers threw for more than one inning. Leading the majors in saves on three different occasions, he started with the Chicago White Sox in 1972. After a season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he went to the New York Yankees where he won a World Series. After six seasons with New York, he would stop in San Diego, Chicago (Cubs), San Francisco, Texas, Oakland and Seattle. His 310 saves is 22nd all-time and his 1502 strikeouts are remarkable for a reliever.
