Belfour was raised in Manitoba and only spent one year in the NCAA playing with N. Dakota and winning a National Championship before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks. For his first few years of pro hockey, Eddy spent it with Saginaw in the IHL and a 33-game stint with the Canadian Olympic team. 1n 1990 he earned the #1 spot and led the Blackhawks to 43 wins in his rookie season. That season he won the Calder Memorial Trophy for outstanding play by a rookie, the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender and the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest team goals-against. He was also nominated for the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player, unprecedented at that time for a goaltender and rookie! He would win the Vezina Trophy again in 1993 and the Jennings Trophy in 1993, 1995, and 1999. Belfour was a fan favourite in Chicago with his famous Eddy the Eagle mask and ALL-STAR caliber play. After 9 seasons in Chicago, Eddy was traded to San Jose in the ‘96/’97 season and did not stay long, signing with the Dallas Stars that off season. In big D, Eddy continued his superb play and backstopped the Stars to two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals winning it all in 1999. After Dallas, Ed spent time in Toronto and Florida. His 484 Wins rank him 5th all-time among NHL Goalies and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011. He is one of only a few players to have won the NCAA Championship, Stanley Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal! Eddy is now in the spirts business with his family and have created BELFOUR SPIRITS, a craft he enjoys and lists his grandparents as being original “moonshiners” back in MB.
