Paul was born in Ottawa and found his now hometown of Kingston by joining the Tragically Hip in 1986. The HIP as the band is known played many local pubs in Kingston before being found by an MCA executive at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. Their first studio album released in the late ‘80s begun a large rock following and their album Road Apples hit #1 in 1991. Paul’s guitar style and being positioned to lead singer Gord Downie’s right when on stage became part of the foundation the Hip built and led to nine of their albums reaching No. 1 on the Canadian charts, 16 Juno Awards and between 1996 and 2016, the Tragically Hip were the best-selling Canadian band in Canada and the fourth best-selling Canadian artist overall in Canada. Paul is an avid hockey fan, played for many years and counts some former NHL’ers as his close friends.
