MacLean was born in France while his father served with the Canadian Military and made Antigonish NS home from the age of 2. Paul played university hockey for Dalhousie, junior for Hull of the QMJHL and represented Canada at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. Drafted by the St. Louis Blues in ’79 he would play 1 game with the Blues before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets. With the Jets he would play 7 seasons scoring 518 points. MacLean would move onto play with Detroit & St. Louis amassing 772 total NHL Games scoring 708 points. Paul then went into the coaching in 1993 in the IHL with the Peoria Riverman and has coached with Phoenix, Kansas City, Quad City where he won a Colonial Cup, Anaheim & Detroit winning a Stanley Cup in ‘07/’08. In 2011 Paul became Head Coach of the Ottawa Senators and won the Jack Adams Award in 2013 while spending almost four seasons leading the Senators.
